(Waterloo, Indiana – August 19, 2011)
A Norfolk Southern freight train hauling rock ballast collided with the rear of a stopped NS freight near Waterloo, IN early Friday morning about 5:25 A.M., derailing both locomotives of the ballast train and 14 freight cars on the train which was stopped.
Miraculously, there were no injuries reported, but corn spilled from hopper cars in the consist of the stopped train, which consisted of 132 cars, 120 of them empty, shutting down U.S. Highway 6, which parallels the NS railroad tracks, as well as disrupting Amtrak passenger train service, which uses NS tracks on that route. Both trains were westbound.
