South Carolina Driver Killed, Passenger Seriously Injured in Amtrak Train Collision at CSX Crossing

A South Carolina motorist was killed last Wednesday, March 12, 2025, and his passenger seriously injured after their vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. The collision occurred at the CSX Transportation railroad crossing on Altman Street at approximately 7:30 pm.
The driver has been identified as William Jeffrey Foster of Moncks Corner. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The passenger’s name has not yet been released, but it was reported the passenger was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
According to CSX submitted records, there are a daily average of 16 trains that go through the railroad crossing at Altman Street at speeds up to 79 mph. Most trains travel between 40-79 mph as they are going through this crossing. It is likely that the Amtrak train involved in this collision was traveling at or close to the upper end of this typical range when the collision occurred. There is also one reported prior collision injuring another motorist.
It is not known yet whether the lights and gates were working properly at the time of this collision. At light and gated crossings, motorists reasonably rely on those warning devices to work properly to provide adequate and timely warning of an oncoming train.
The local police department is still investigating this collision.
