Female Pedestrian Killed Attempting To Cross Norfolk Southern Tracks
(Spartanburg, South Carolina – September 10, 2011)
A 51-year-old woman from Spartanburg, SC was struck and killed by a Norfolk Southern freight train Saturday evening just after 8:30 P.M. as she tried to cross NS Railroad tracks at the Sibley Street crossing in Spartanburg.
Investigators identified the victim as Lavenia Pitts Gentry, but would not reveal any causal factors. The crossing is equipped with lights, gates and bells, but there was no word on whether they functioned properly, either.
