(Martinez, California – May 13, 2011)
An as-yet unidentified man, who suffered moderate injuries, was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CA late Friday night after his pickup truck was struck at Union Pacific Railroad’s Ferry Street crossing in Martinez, CA. The westbound Union Pacific train that struck the vehicle was travelling between 25 and 30 mph.
The accident occurred at 9:11 P.M., and Martinez police were not sure whether the truck was partially or fully in the crossing when the collision took place. MPD Corporal Mike Estanol said the train struck the vehicle, and it landed on its roof, trapping the driver inside. He added that the crossing gates were down and the warning bells were still ringing as rescuers cleared the scene.
