Union Pacific Train Interrupts Family Hike, Seriously Injures Mother
(Dunsmuir, California – November 19, 2011)
A family of four, intent on a fun weekend hike from Dunsmuir, CA to Mossbrae Falls, took a tragic twist about 12:00 Noon Saturday, when a Union Pacific freight train came upon the four of them as they walked near UPRR tracks.
The father and two children were able to leap free from the train’s but the mother was struck and seriously injured. The unidentified woman was rushed to Mercy Medical Center Mount Shasta in Dunsmuir.
“They encountered a train,” explained Dunsmuir Fire Chief Dan Padilla. “The other three were able to clear the tracks, but the one hiker was not able to and was struck by the train.”
The tragedy took place about two miles north of the Dunsmuir Union Pacific depot.
