Two Seriously Injured At Dangerous, Unguarded NS Kentucky Crossing
(Walton, Kentucky — December 31, 2011)
Two were seriously injured Saturday afternoon about 5:45 P.M. when their vehicle was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of a private drive and NS railroad tracks in Walton, KY.
Wade Strickland, 34, and Riochelle Henderson, 19, both of Erlanger, KY, were driving across NS tracks at a private drive in the 200 block of Old Nicholson Road near Dixie Highway when the collision occurred at the intersection which has no automatic protective devices such as lights, bells or gates, instead relying totally upon passive signage for "protecting" the driving public from trains.
Both victims were airlifted by helicopter to University Hospital in Cincinnati, OH, where Strickland was admitted with life-threatening injuries and Henderson was admitted in less serious condition. Both were still hospitalized as of Sunday afternoon.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation into the accident.
