Texas Semi Truck Involved in Injury Crash at Known Dangerous Union Pacific Crossing
(Missouri City, Texas – December 4, 2023)
Another collision occurred at 7:14 am this morning at the known dangerous Union Pacific railroad crossing in Missouri City, Texas. The locomotive engineer was transported to a local hospital with injuries. According to police reports, the tractor trailer involved in the collision was trapped on the crossing due to heavy vehicular traffic on nearby U.S. 90 when it was struck by a freight train.
Unfortunately, tractor trailers becoming trapped on the short storage space between the tracks and US 90 on Cravens Road, and then becoming involved in a collision with a train, is a common scenario at this crossing. The Union Pacific crossing where this latest collision occurred has been known to be a “problematic” crossing by Union Pacific and local officials for years.
As far back as 2017, reports were submitted with the focus of improving the railroad crossing through reengineering the crossing to allow vehicles to escape the tracks if they are trapped on the crossing and a train is coming. Yet, as of 2023, nothing has been done to change the layout of the crossing or provide increased active warning time for motorists that find themselves trapped on the crossing with a train bearing down on them.
