(Council Bluffs, Iowa – November 10, 2011)
An unidentified pedestrian, waiting for one train to pass the dangerous, unguarded crossing of Union Pacific Railroad and Second Avenue in Council Bluffs, IA Thursday afternoon about 2:00 P.M., was struck and seriously injured by a train coming from the opposite direction.
The victim was standing near the westernmost UPRR tracks watching a train pass on the other set of tracks when he was struck by the second train, suffering a serious injury to his right arm as the train knocked him to the ground by the tracks. The Second Avenue crossing has no electronic (lights, bells or gates) signal devices, utilizing only railroad crossbuck signs for crossing protection.
