Passenger Injured At Dangerous, Unguarded West Virginia Crossing
(Nitro, West Virginia – March 22, 2012)
The female passenger in a truck hauling an auto to a recycling center was hospitalized after the truck in which she was riding was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of Owens Street and NS railroad tracks in Nitro, WV just before 1:00 P.M. Thursday afternoon.
The crossing, which has only standard, passive railroad crossbucks and lacks any automatic protection such as lights, bells and gates, has now been the site of four accidents, one of them a fatality.
Listed as a “private” crossing, there is no requirement for trains to whistle as they approach such intersections, thereby giving no warning of their approach.
