(Ellisville, Mississippi – March 28, 2014)
Residents of Ellisville, MS were awakened from their sleep early Friday morning at about 4:15 A.M. when a locomotive and 19 cars of a 101-car Norfolk Southern freight train derailed below the overpass of a main area arterial highway.
Rodney Parker of the Jones County Dept. of Emergency Management said none of the northbound train’s derailed cars overturned.
No injuries were reported nor was a cause given for the accident, but cleanup work forced the closure of Mississippi Highway 590 as well as intersecting U.S. Highway 11 and State Highway 29 in Jones County, MS.
The altered traffic patterns disrupted student access to Jones County Junior College, as main access between Tech Boulevard and Front Street caused them to detour to their destination.
