New Jersey Motorist Killed at Conrail Crossing

(South Plainfield, New Jersey – July 4, 2021)

An unidentified motorist was killed Sunday afternoon at about 2:20 pm at a railroad crossing in South Plainfield, New Jersey. According to reports, the collision caused the vehicle to flip on its roof and catch fire. Several responding fire departments were able to extinguish the fire, but the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crossing where this collision occurred is owned and maintained by Conrail. It accommodates an average of eight daily freight trains at speeds up to 50 mph. The crossing is equipped with lights and gates. It is unclear if they were operating properly at the time of this incident. South Plainfield authorities are continuing to investigate this collision.
