Multiple Injuries after Tractor-Trailer and Freight Train Collision at Dangerous, Unguarded CSX Crossing
(Glassport, Pennsylvania – June 23, 2021)
A railroad crossing collision in Glassport, PA yesterday sent multiple individuals to the hospital for varying injuries. The tractor-trailer leaving an industrial facility was struck by a CSX freight train at about 11:30 am. According to reports, the tractor was hauling recycled paper when it was struck. The collision caused the vehicle to jackknife, totally destroying the trailer.
It is not yet known if the CSX freight train ever blew the train horn prior to this collision. The crossing where this collision occurred accommodates trains at speeds up to 25 mph and is frequently used by large tractor-trailers, like the one involved in this incident. However, there are no active warning devices, such as lights and gates at this crossing. Studies have demonstrated that lights and gates can reduce the likelihood of a collision by up to 93%.
