Missouri Motorist Seriously Injured by KCS Freight Train in Crossing Collision
(Amoret, Missouri – November 9, 2024)
An Missouri motorist was hospitalized November 9, 2024, after being injured in a vehicle collision with a freight train. The collision was reported at around 1:35 p.m. Saturday afternoon and occurred at the intersection of NW 3002 Rd. and Route Y, about a mile north of Amoret, Missouri. The KCS/CN crossing where this collision occurred was not equipped with any active warning devices, such as lights and gates.
According to initial reports from the Missouri Highway Patrol, a 41-year-old Amoret man had been driving his 2001 Dodge Dakota west on the roadway when he was struck by a freight train. The identity and condition of the driver has yet to be released by public officials.
According to KCS submitted records, a daily average of 15 trains travel over the crossing at typical speeds of 59 miles per hour. Despite the relatively high train speed, the crossing where this collision occurred does not have lights and gates. It is virtually certain that the addition of lights and gates could have prevented this tragedy and the three collisions prior. KCS/CN and Operation Lifesaver know that the installation of lights and gates at these unprotected crossings saves lives. Studies that have been conducted over fifty years ago confirm that lights and gates offer the ability to drastically reduce the number of vehicle/train collisions by as much as 96%.
The Missouri Highway Patrol is still investigating the collision.
