Mississippi Brothers Killed in Freight Train Collision at BNSF Crossing
(Plantersville, Mississippi – November 7, 2024)
Two Mississippi motorists have lost their lives after their truck was struck by a high-speed BNSF Railway train in Lee County. The collision occurred early Thursday morning at about 12:50 am on a railroad crossing owned and operated by BNSF Railway Company. The BNSF crossing is located on Brewer Road, just west of Highway 6.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the victims have been identified as Nettleton residents, 29-year-old Graham Phillips, and his older brother, 32-year-old Stover Phillips. Based on initial reports, Graham Phillips was driving the truck at the time of the collision. Sadly, both brothers were pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to BNSF submitted records, a daily average of 14 trains travel through this crossing at speeds up to 60 mph. The BNSF crossing is equipped with lights and gates. However, it is not known if they were properly functioning at the time of the collision. It is also not known at this time the circumstances that preceded the collision or how long the Phillips brothers were on the tracks before being struck by the high-speed BNSF train.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating this collision.
