Illinois High School Student Killed in Railroad Crossing Collision
(Barrington, Illinois – January 25, 2024)
A Barrington High School student was killed last week after she was struck by a Metra Union Pacific Northwest train. The collision occurred last Thursday at about 7:45 am. The pedestrian has been identified as 17-year-old Marin Lacson. Marin was a high school junior and on her way to school when the collision occurred. The community, particularly Marin’s friends and her school, Barrington High School, is mourning her loss.
According to reports, Marin was struck by a second passing train. It is unclear if the first passing train obstructed her view down the tracks and led her to believe that it was safe to cross. It is well known in the railroad industry that these double track crossing can be particularly dangerous due to the possibility of a second hidden train. Discussions about enhancing safety measures near train tracks are underway following this tragic event.
The investigation of this tragedy is still ongoing.
