(October 21, 2022 – Stonington, Illinois)
On Friday, October 21, the Christian Country Sheriff reported a 69-year-old worker for the Legacy Grain Cooperative died. He was reportedly operating on some equipment on the tracks and did not see the engine coming and was struck. While the only hazardous material that was spilled was diesel fuel, the Stonington police are still investigating the crash.
Around 12:20 p.m. a freight train derailed near American Legion Way and the Norfolk Southern Railway Crossing. At the time when the collision occurred, they were also shoving railcars. The accident resulted in four cars and the locomotive all being derailed. The immediate fatality of the worker was announced. The Christian County Sheriff’s Office announced that people should avoid the railroad crossings in Stonington because there was only one passable railroad crossing on West Street at the time.
