Driver Injured, Passenger Shaken in Collision with CSX Train at Non-Gated Crossing
(Columbus Grove, Ohio – June 26, 2012)
The driver of a Ford Ranger pickup truck was injured, his passenger shaken up, and the truck totaled Tuesday afternoon a little after 1:00 P.M. when the truck was hit on the driver’s side by a CSX freight train enroute from Toledo, OH to Cincinnati, OH at the non-gated crossing of CSX tracks and Broadway Street in Columbus Grove, OH.
Neither occupant was identified by police respondents, but the driver was taken to Lima Memorial Health System in Lima, OH for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
Even though 17 trains cross the intersection daily at speeds of up to 35 mph, the crossing lacks crossing gates to keep motorists and trains apart. There are standard flashing lights located at each approach side.
The stopped train blocked several major intersections in Columbus Grove for over two hours while Columbus Grove Police and Putnam County Sheriff’s Officers conducted their investigation into the collision.
