City Officials Blast Norfolk Southern For Failure to Report Derailment
(Elmira, New York – November 21, 2011)
The mysterious derailment of a freight carload of sand has officials targeting NS for failure to report the Saturday evening accident to the city or the property owners.
The rail car landed in the Hilliard Company’s parking lot, but as of Monday night’s City Council meeting, no attempt at communication by NS had been initiated.
“The frustrating part of this whole story is that Norfolk Southern at no time, even up to this point, contacted the city,” complained City Manager John Burin. “We had to go to them. No one has called us to explain anything, and no one had called Hilliard, either,” Burin continued.
Councilman James Hare suggested the city alert the New York State Attorney General’s Office in regard to the railroad’s refusal to communicate.
