(San Francisco, California – September 10, 2011)
The 13th fatality occurring on Caltrain railroad tracks thus far this year (there were 11 total for all of 2010), an unidentified pedestrian, attempting to cross at the Jerrold Avenue railroad crossing, was hit and killed by southbound train #449, carrying 265 passengers in a 79 mph zone, Saturday afternoon about 5:15 P.M.
The male victim, referred to as a “trespasser” as well as “on the tracks when he was not supposed to be on the tracks,” by Caltrain Spokeswoman Christine Dunn, was not identified by a spokesman for the San Francisco coroner’s office.
The coroner’s office will conduct “further investigation to determine whether the incident was an accident or a suicide.” Caltrain traffic was disrupted for over two hours with the tragedy occurring a half hour prior to the start of a sold-out baseball game between the Giants and the Dodgers at AT&T Park.
