California Motorist Injured at Notoriously Dangerous Burlingame Crossing

By Pottroff & Karlin LLC |

(Burlingame, California – November 8, 2023)

A California motorist was hospitalized yesterday after their vehicle was struck by a Caltrain at the notoriously dangerous crossing of Broadway Ave in Burlingame. The collision occurred just after 4:40 pm between the northbound Caltrain and the westbound vehicle.

The Broadway Crossing has been the site of at least seventeen prior collisions. At least fifteen of those prior collisions have occurred within the last fifteen years, averaging at least one collision per year. The crossing is heavily used by both the motoring public and passenger trains. According to FRA submitted information, the crossing accommodates an average of 104 trains a day at typical speeds of 79 mph. There is also an average of approximately 25,000 vehicles that use the crossing daily as well.

Broadway Avenue has six traffic lanes of varying widths between 10 and 12 feet. There are no shoulders or bicycle lanes, and each side of Broadway has sidewalks that vary from six to eight feet in width. Due to its dangerous nature, the Broadway Crossing is currently ranked as the #1 highest priority project statewide by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for grade separation priority.

Local police are still investigating this collision.

Train crash cases are unique and complex with many different potential pitfalls, such as federal preemption. Anytime I get hired or even get a call from a train crash victim, my very first call is to Nathan’s firm.
