Amtrak Crushes Citrus-Hauling 18-Wheeler at Dangerous, Unguarded Crossing
(Haines City, Florida – October 8, 2011)
An Amtrak train carrying 179 passengers barreled into a semi-trailer truck loaded with citrus fruit at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of 3rd Street in Haines City, FL Saturday afternoon about 12:30 P.M.
The truck, driven by Carolyn Hoxie of Putnam, CT, had just left the Haines City Citrus Growers facility at 3rd and Railroad, and had to stop at the stop sign at 3rd and Hinson Ave. Before it could move onto Hinson, the train appeared and demolished the trailer.
There are no electronic signals at the 3rd Street/CSX Railroad crossing, but Haines City Police still awarded the trucker a citation for “stopping on the railroad tracks.” At least she didn’t get a ticket for failing to obey the stop sign at Hinson Ave.
