(May 7, 2026 – Reidsville, North Carolina)
A young man was fatally struck by a Norfolk Southern in the early afternoon of Thursday, May 7, 2026. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m. in southern Reidsville, on the tracks extending between Allison Street and the Food Lion on Way Street, bordering the Greenview Cemetery to the west
The victim has been identified by the Reidsville Police Department as 22-year-old Julius K. Miller of Reidsville. According to a media release, Miller was found and pronounced dead at the scene.
Per FRA inventory records, the tracks on which the collision occurred are property of the Norfolk Southern Railway Company but are also used by Amtrak. It sees an average of 16 total day and night trains, which travel at rapid velocities of up to 79 miles per hour. The Woodrow Street Crossing to the northwest of the Greenview Cemetery is the nearest location designated for traversing the railroad tracks and is equipped with active warning devices, including lights, gates, and bells, but has no pedestrian crossing or even sidewalk. The next nearest location to go across the tracks is the East Richardson Drive overpass to the southwest of the Greenview Cemetery that, similarly, has no pedestrian walkways. As a result, pedestrians may have difficulty finding an accessible location to safely cross the tracks at—an issue which may be exacerbated by the several sections of dense vegetation lining the tracks and obstructing sight lines for the train crew, nearby motorists, and pedestrians themselves.
This tragedy occurred just weeks prior to another pedestrian-Norfolk Southern train collision in Reidsville, NC, that left a man and woman dead.
The Reidsville Police Department is continuing to investigate the collision.
