Two Ohioans Injured in Collision with Norfolk Southern Train

(December 16, 2025 – Canton, Ohio)

A driver and his passenger were seriously injured in the early hours of Tuesday, December 16, 2025, after their SUV was struck by a Norfolk Southern train in Canton, OH. The disastrous crash occurred at the crossing located at 3rd St. NE and Rowland Ave NE.

The driver and passenger have remained unnamed. According to the Canton Fire Department, they received a call regarding the crash at approximately 1:35 a.m. Upon arrival, they found that the train had pushed the SUV about a quarter of a mile, tangling it in its front. The driver was able to remove himself prior to the first responders’ arrival. However, the passenger was found unconscious and with major injuries, requiring equipment for removal. The driver is receiving treatment at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, and the passenger is currently under care at Aultman Hospital.

Crossing records identify Norfolk Southern as the operating railroad. Per NS’ records, the railroad crossing at which the accident occurred has an average of 10 trains on its tracks during the day and night. The trains travel at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, with the train involved in the collision operating at 28 miles per hour, according to its crew. It is equipped with gates, lights, and bells; however, it is unclear if they were operating at the time of this crash. Moreover, location just off an intersection creates distractions for drivers alongside reducing their crucial decision-making time. Various buildings on the corners of the approach to the crossing disturb motorists’ sight lines, further diminishing their ability to observe oncoming trains and safely cross the tracks. The crossing has seen at least 10 prior accidents.

The collision remains under investigation.
