A 136-car Union Pacific train hauling coal from Wyoming to Illinois derailed 22 of its loaded cars in Denison, IA early Sunday about 6:30 A.M., spilling coal and wrecked hopper cars along an 800 foot stretch of UPRR tracks and snarling traffic in the Crawford County Seat community.

Both tracks of Union Pacific’s double track main line through Denison were blocked, and UPRR authorities said the railroad should re-open Monday morning, even though cleanup of the wreck may take considerably longer.
