A 19-year-old local resident died early Tuesday morning when she was struck by an Amtrak passenger train as she tried to walk across the crossing of Green Street and Canadian National Railroad tracks in the southern Illinois city of Anna.

Bethany Johnson was hit about 3:15 A.M. and was still alive when emergency services arrived, but was later pronounced dead at the Union County Hospital in Anna. The Green Street crossing has lights and gates for vehicular traffic but not for pedestrians crossing there.
