Up Train Demolishes Tractor, Injures Farmer at Dangerous, Unguarded Crossing

(Cozad, Nebraska – September 29, 2011)

A Dawson County, NE farmer, Kent G. Guthard, 42, of Cozad, NE was injured and his John Deere tractor nearly split in two Thursday afternoon about 5:18 P.M. as he tried to cross Union Pacific Railroad tracks at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of Road 424.

The victim, whose tractor was hauling a hay baler, attempted to stop once he saw the westbound train, but was unable to do so, and was struck by the 2,908-ton train at 50 mph.

Guthard’s tractor, which was headed south, was a total loss, and he was transported to Lexington Regional Health Center in Lexington, NE with massive cuts on his head.
