(Thermal, California – October 27, 2011)

Trapped on Union Pacific Railroad tracks by traffic waiting for the light at Highway 111 and Airport Boulevard, the driver of an 18-wheeler loaded with California grapefruit escaped injury, but had to endure the loss of thousands of grapefruit.

The Union Pacific freight train crushed his trailer load of fresh fruit into grapefruit juice about 6:30 P.M. Thursday evening in Thermal, CA. Ironically, Highway 111 is also known as “Grapefruit Boulevard” as it passes through Thermal, paralleling Union Pacific tracks, and creating hazardous traffic conditions with the traffic light backing vehicles across and beyond the Airport Blvd./UP railroad crossing.

No indication of traffic charges were released by the California Highway Patrol, who investigated the accident, but officers did say the driver would be charged for the expense of cleaning up the thousands of pounds of damaged, squeezed grapefruit.
