Union Pacific Injures Teen Driver at Dangerous, Unguarded Crossing
An as-yet unidentified 18-year-old male motorist driving his Dodge Ram pickup on West Waverly Road near Raymond, NE Thursday afternoon did not see an approaching Union Pacific freight train at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of UPRR tracks and skidded into the first locomotive.
The victim, suffering from a badly broken femur, was airlifted to Bryan LGH in Lincoln, NE. The crossing of West Waverly and UPRR lacks any form of electronic protection (gates, lights or bells), relying solely upon a single crossbuck sign as a warning of the existence of trains. Even though Lancaster County Sheriff’s officers acknowledged that the teen driver tried to stop on the gravel road and that there were no lights or gates at the crossing, they still charged the injured victim with a “Failure to Yield” citation.
