Ungated Norfolk Southern Railroad Crossing Records 15th Accident
(Milford, Delaware – July 10, 2011)
A Milford, DE crossing of State Route 113 and Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks, which has always lacked crossing gates, experienced its 15th vehicle/train accident since 1982 Sunday afternoon when a semi-trailer truck loaded with potatoes was literally “mashed” by a westbound NS freight train.
A trucker unfamiliar with the route, Samuel Frymoyer, 25, of McAlisterville, PA was unable to stop his truck in time to avoid a collision with the train, which struck the trailer and scattered the potatoes across a wide area, even though the crossing was equipped with flashing lights.
The accident forced closure of the highway for several hours as crews cleaned up the massive mess. The truck driver, meanwhile, received a traffic ticket for his trouble. However, the spilled potatoes became a windfall for the Food Bank of Delaware
