A semi-trailer truck driver hauling water for oilfield use was seriously injured Tuesday morning in Williams County, northwest of Williston, ND, at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of 54th Street, NW and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks when the trailer was cut in half by a BNSF freight train traveling southwest.

The driver of the 2003 Kenworth 18-wheeler, Daniel Fowler, 27, of Oak Harbor, OH, first stopped at the crossing, which is equipped only with stop signs and a “private crossing” sign and has no automatic protection such as lights, bells or gates, and then proceeded across the tracks without seeing or hearing the oncoming train.

The victim was first transported to Mercy Medical Center in Williston, but the extent of his injuries caused hospital personnel to have him airlifted to a hospital in Minot, ND for more advanced treatment.
