Truck driver suffers train accident injuries after collision
An Amtrak train traveling from Lee’s Summit to St. Louis was involved in two accidents today, including one that left a motorist with serious injuries.
About 8 a.m., a 44-year-old Lee’s Summit man drove around a crossing barrier that had just lowered on tracks at Thompson Drive and Hamblen Road, said Sgt. Mike Childs with the Lee’s Summit Police Department. The train struck the rear of the pickup and sheared it in half.
The driver was ejected about 40 feet. The train pushed the pickup bed about 100 yards down the railroad tracks, Childs said.
The driver was rushed to a hospital, where he was in the intensive-care unit. He was expected to survive. Authorities had not released his name, Childs said.
