Transit Official Sees Injury to Elderly Pedestrian as “Opportunity”
(Lewisville, Texas – September 25, 2011 – Serious injury to an 86-year-old pedestrian hit by Denton County Transportation Authority’s recently-launched “A-Train” railroad commuter service north of the Dallas metropolitan area Monday about 7:00 P.M. was viewed by DCTA Spokeswoman Dee Leggett as an “opportunity” rather than a near-tragedy.
Victim Maria Bonilla was walking along the trackside sidewalk near the North Mill Street crossing of DCTA railroad tracks in Lewisville, TX when she unexpectedly turned toward the train’s path and was hit. The accident, which sent the victim to the Medical Center of Plano via helicopter, was the second since the rail line’s inauguration June 20.
“It gives us another opportunity to educate the public on rail safety,” said DCTA’s Leggett.
The victim remained hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday.
