Train Kills Teen Walking Near Railroad Tracks

(Mount Vernon, Washington – April 1, 2011)

An 18-year-old student at Mount Vernon’s Emerson High School was struck and killed by a southbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train early Friday morning as he walked along the east side of the railroad tracks. Police said the young man was walking with his hood up and possibly listening to an iPod as he walked with his back to the oncoming train and likely did not hear the train approaching. Police officers and EMS personnel responded to the scene, near Riverside Drive and Cameron Way, about 9:40 A.M. The teen is, as of now, unidentified pending notification of relatives.
