Three Injured At Dangerous, Unguarded Private Iowa Crossing
(Durant, Iowa – January 23, 2012)
A 51-year-old man driving a pickup truck with two teenagers as passengers was struck by a westbound Iowa Interstate freight train traveling at 40 mph on the west edge of Durant, IA Monday morning about 8:18 A.M.at the dangerous, unguarded private crossing serving the Durant Iron & Metal Works facility on Highway 927, resulting in serious injuries for all three.
The driver was Kevin Wright of Wilton, IA, and his passengers were Kyle Wright, 18, also of Wilton, and Micca Wooster, 18, of Stockton, IA.
The crossing has no automatic protective devices such as lights, bells or gates, and is guarded only by smaller-than-standard-size highway “stop” signs and signs designating it as a private crossing.
The truck was struck on the on the passenger side, and all three victims were taken to Genesis Medical Center in Davenport, IA for treatment of their serious injuries.
