Texas Driver Killed after Amtrak Train Collision at Union Pacific Crossing
(Round Rock, Texas – May 15, 2024)
A Texas motorist was killed after their SUV was struck by a high-speed Amtrak train in Round Rock. The collision occurred last Wednesday morning at about 10:58 am on a railroad-highway crossing owned and controlled by Union Pacific. The Union Pacific crossing is near the Interstate 35 frontage roads and McNeil Road.
According to Union Pacific submitted records, a daily average of 19 trains travel through this crossing at speeds up to 60 mph. There has also been at least a half dozen prior collisions at this crossing, resulting in catastrophic injuries.
The Union Pacific crossing is equipped with lights and gates. However, it is not known if they were properly functioning at the time of the collision. It is also not known at this time if traffic caused the vehicle to become trapped on this crossing at the same time the high-speed Amtrak train was approaching the crossing.
Local police are still investigating the cause of this collision.
