(Morton County, North Dakota – December 6, 2011)

The driver of a Morton County, ND snow plow was injured and the dump truck/snow plow he was operating totaled when his vehicle was struck by an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of Morton County Road No. 89 and BNSF railroad tracks Tuesday about 2:30 P.M.

Russell Heinle, 59, of Hebron, ND, was southbound on the gravel-surfaced county road when he encountered the train at the crossing, which is equipped solely with standard, passive railroad crossbuck signs, which offer no warning whatsoever of approaching trains.

“He was crossing the tracks and didn’t see the train,” said Sgt. Will Vance of the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The victim was transported to Medcenter One in Bismarck, ND for treatment of his injuries.
