Rail Yard Private Crossing Accident Kills Georgia CSX Employee
(Waycross, Georgia – April 29, 2011)
A Waycross, Georgia resident and employee of the CSX Railroad was killed about 6:00 A.M. Friday morning when the pickup truck he was driving was hit by three unattended, rolling freight cars at a private rail crossing at CSX’s Rice Yard in Waycross, Georgia. The massive train yard facility is in the southeast part of the state.
Roberto Martinez, 45, died at the scene of the accident. The victim was trapped inside his crushed pickup truck, which flipped upside-down and burst into flames as a result of the collision, according to Waycross PD Lt. Tommy Cox. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of our lost colleague,” said CSX Communications Director Carla Groleau from CSX corporate headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida. Circumstances surrounding the tragic accident remain under investigation.
