(Portland, Oregon – July 21, 2024)
A Portland motorist was hospitalized on Sunday after sustaining serious injuries in a vehicle collision with a MAX Light Rail. The collision was reported at around 3 p.m. and occurred near the intersection of Northeast 108th Avenue and East Burnside Street.
According to initial reports from Portland Fire & Rescue, the vehicle involved in the collision was severely damaged and had landed on its roof after the initial impact. Emergency personnel successfully extricated the injured driver from the vehicle who was transported to a local hospital.
The identity and condition of the driver has yet to be released by public officials.
The MAX or Metropolitan Area Express, Light Rail is owned and operated by TriMet, a public corporation of the State of Oregon. The MAX Light Rail has 97 stations and over 60 miles of track, with five rail lines that spread from the Portland city center to different sections of the city. The light rail operates daily and runs every 15 minutes or less, with services beginning around 4 am and ending just before midnight. The top speed for MAX Light Rail cars is 55 mph though it is still unknown how fast the MAX rail car involved in the collision was travelling at the time of impact.
Police are still investigating this collision.
