Pennsylvania Motorist Killed at Dangerous, Unguarded Norfolk Southern Crossing
(Washington Township, Pennsylvania – April 20, 2022)
A 60-year-old Cambria County resident was killed Wednesday night at about 9:20 pm when her vehicle was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train. The collision occurred at the dangerous, and unguarded Norfolk Southern railroad crossing in Washington Township.
Cambria County Coroner Jeffrey Less was called to the scene. The investigation is ongoing. But it is clear that the installation of lights and gates could have prevented this tragedy. Norfolk Southern and Operation Lifesaver know that lights and gates are the most effective type of protection at railroad crossings. Studies that have been conducted over fifty years ago confirm that lights and gates offer the ability to drastically reduce the number of vehicle/train collisions by as much as 96%.
