Pedestrian Overtaken, Run Down by CSX Train at Notoriously Dangerous Crossing
(Kingston, New York – August 29, 2012)
An as-yet unidentified male pedestrian died after being overtaken and struck by a CSX freight train at the crossing of Foxhall Avenue and CSX railroad tracks in Kingston, NY at about 8:30 A.M. Wednesday morning.
The victim was walking north beside, but not on, the tracks when he was clipped by the overhang of the train at the crossing, which, even though equipped with lights, bells and gates, has now been the site of 11 accidents resulting in two fatalities and five non-fatal injuries. An average of 28 trains cross the Foxhall Avenue/CSX intersection daily at a top speed of 35 mph.
The victim was still alive, but unconscious, following the collision, and was flown to Albany (NY) Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from massive head injuries on arrival . He was described as a white male in his 20’s, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, but positive identification could not be released prior to notification of his family.
