A West Virginia resident who walked CSX Railroad tracks daily to catch a MARC (Maryland Transit Authority) commuter train at the Duffields MARC station was struck and killed early Wednesday morning at 5:26 A.M. by a consist of four CSX locomotives in Shenandoah Valley, WV.

The victim, John Kinner, 51, of Shenandoah Valley, was walking east along the north side of the tracks as he did daily to get to his job in Maryland, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Sell, who investigated the tragedy.

“Normally, that (train) traffic is westbound so it would be coming toward him,” explained Deputy Sell. “In this case, the four engines were actually travelling eastbound, coming up behind him. He probably thought that it was going to pass him on his side.”

The victim was pronounced dead at 6:15 A.M. by a medical examiner at the scene, which was about 100 yards east of Ridge Road and Potomac Avenue.
