Oregon Pedestrian Killed by Amtrak Train on Union Pacific Railroad Tracks

(Springfield, Oregon – March 16, 2020)

A young Springfield, OR resident, described as being “under the age of 18” was killed late Monday afternoon just before 6 PM, PDT by an Amtrak train.  The victim was walking along easily-accessible and non-fenced Union Pacific Railroad tracks near Holly Street and South 49th Street in Springfield when he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train.

The rail corridor where the tragedy occurred carries a daily average of a dozen Union Pacific freight and Amtrak passenger trains at a maximum allowable speed of 50 mph.

KMTR-TV Channel 16 News Reporter Angelina Dixson said that “People who live in the neighborhood say they were shocked” by the tragic death, and “Have never witnessed anything like this before.”
