One Injured When Union Pacific Train Hits Semi-Trailer Truck Caught On Crossing

(Maplewood, Missouri – August 1, 2011)

The passenger of a pickup truck, waiting for an oncoming train, was injured Monday morning about 7:00 A.M. when the driver of a semi-trailer truck could not negotiate the crossing of Sutton Boulevard and Union Pacific Railroad tracks, and was struck by a UPRR train.

The truck driver was attempting to make the sharp turn off of Sutton and onto Railroad Street. The train – a local switcher operating in an industrial area required to operate at no higher speed than that which will allow them to stop before hitting any obstruction – ripped the rear door and back portion of the trailer off, sending parts careening into the waiting pickup truck.

Police said it was too early to decide if the driver of the truck would be ticketed for the accident, but Union Pacific officials were mum on the possibility of operating rules having been violated.
