(Augusta Township, Michigan – December 2, 2011)

One person died and more injuries may have occurred Friday morning about 9:30 A.M. when a Ford Escape collided with a Norfolk Southern freight train at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of McKean Road and NS railroad tracks in rural Augusta Township, MI, northeast of Milan, MI.

The crossing is equipped only with standard railroad crossbuck and highway “stop” signs, and lacks any form of automatic protection (lights, bells or gates).

A witness at a business about 100 feet from the accident scene indicated one or more other passengers may have been in the car.

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office personnel are handling the investigation into the tragedy.
