A 19-year-old man, walking his bicycle and attempting to cross Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks in downtown Middletown, OH, was struck and seriously injured by a Norfolk Southern freight train Wednesday morning about 8:00 A.M.

Willis T. Fields of Middletown, OH, had waited for the passage of a southbound NS freight train before crossing the double-tracked main line, but failed to see or hear the northbound train, which was hidden by the first train. The victim was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH, where he was in surgery for treatment of his injuries, which one witness described as “very bad.”

Area resident Kodi Kuhn, 20, who lives three blocks away, described the location as “a dangerous area.”

“There’s been a couple people hit by this train since I’ve lived in Middletown.” He said.

Although the accident blocked several crossings, there may not have been a crossing where the cyclist attempted to cross the tracks. The site has been the scene of three other fatalities since 2008.
