Norfolk Southern Train Clobbers Semi At Extremely Dangerous, Unguarded Illinois Crossing
(Granite City, Illinois – August 17, 2011)
An unsuspecting truck driver was injured and his 18-wheeler’s trailer heavily damaged when it was hit by a northbound Norfolk Southern freight train at the obscured crossing. The crossing, C Street, in Granite City, IL lacks any electronic (lights, bells or gates) protection, having only standard, passive railroad crossbuck signs and triangular “yield” signs.
Trains travelling north are hidden, especially from eastward vehicular traffic, by buildings and warehouses in the area used primarily as an industrial district. The extent of the victim’s injuries were not listed, but he was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
