(Toledo, Ohio – December 19, 2011)

A nine-year-old boy, missing for nearly half a day, was found dead beneath a string of railroad freight cars in Norfolk Southern’s railroad yard in Toledo, OH early Monday morning, the victim of a horrible accident while playing on the railroad cars.

Devaunte Roddy-O’Neil, a third grade student at Toledo’s Glenwood Elementary School, was last seen alive by family members early Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, the railroad reported that the railroad cars beneath which he was found were last moved at 1:35 P.M. Sunday afternoon and had been stationary for five days.

Investigators feel the youngster, who had just turned nine on December 5, was probably playing, and was caught underneath the cars when they shifted as they were moved.

Devaunte’s mother, Danita Roddy, became concerned when her son failed to come home for supper, and finally called Toledo Police to report him as missing about 12:30 A.M. Monday morning. The boy’s body was discovered nine minutes later.

Although the tragic death remains under investigation, officers said it appears to be accidental.
