Motorist Seriously Injured In Vermont Non-Gated Crossing Accident
(Northfield, Vermont – November 3, 2011)
The driver of a pickup truck was seriously injured early Thursday afternoon about 1:00 P.M. when he collided with a New England Central Railway freight train at the crossing of Cox Brook Road and NECR tracks in Northfield, VT.
The truck was hit on the passenger side, impaled upon the front of the first locomotive and dragged, with the victim inside, more than 1,000 feet before stopping.
Mattew Ziniti, 23, of Mansfield, MA was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH with multiple injuries. The Cox Brook Road crossing has flashing lights, but no crossing gate to protect motorists from oncoming trains.
