Mississippi Motorist Injured by Amtrak Train at Ungated Canadian National Crossing
(Tunica, Mississippi – September 27, 2011)
A motorist was struck and critically injured Tuesday morning about 7:35 A.M. as he attempted to cross Canadian National Railroad tracks near the northern Mississippi farming and casino gaming community of Tunica. The victim was struck by Amtrak’s “City of New Orleans” passenger train carrying 147 passengers and 10 crew members bound for New Orleans, LA.
Will Spencer, the motorist, had his SUV split in half by the impact, with the front portion landing in nearby woods, and the rear half flung onto the road. The crossing of Prichard Road and CN tracks has no gates but does have electronic flashers.
The victim was alert at the scene, but his injuries required that he be airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, TN.
