Light Rail Crossing Gates Fail, Female Motorist Injured By Train
(Folsom, California – October 26, 2011)
A female motorist attempting to turn left from Natoma Street onto Folsom Boulevard was struck and injured by a Sacramento Regional Transit Authority light rail commuter train when crossing gates intended to protect drivers failed to lower as the train approached.
RTA Operations Chief Mark Lonergan admitted that the gate did not come down and that RTA was investigating. Few other details were provided.
The train operator had reported the gate malfunction, and was given permission to continue at low speed, but to stop at every intersection.
“I can say we are investigating the operator’s performance in this incident,” said Lonergan.
